A NATURAL MASTERPIECE…BUILT BRICK BY BRICK!

Some houses are built and some houses are created. 241 Chevallum Road is testimony to our Sellers vision, determination, and skill to create a truly earthborn masterpiece one handmade brick at a time. Purchased in 1985 this perfect 17 acre estate was just what the family had been searching for to create a self-sufficient lifestyle and unforgettable memories. After numerous years spent researching and studying natural building products and consulting with various experts it was decided in 1989 to create a self-supporting pole home with the ultimate aim of living off the grid.

The brief to the award-winning pole home designer was complex and lengthy as this was cutting edge design for the era. Not only did it have to be a comfortable, functional, and liveable family home but it also needed to be eco-friendly and provide the ability to ’live off the grid´. The unique boomerang shape ensured that aspect and solar collection were maximised and equally important that the building materials provided thermal insulation to keep the house cool in summer and cosy in winter.

From concept to completion this labour of love involved the entire family plus specialised trades and took three years of determination, passion, and hard work. Once the self-supporting pole structure was up and the roof was on it allowed the family to start manufacturing compressed earth bricks one at a time. This was achieved with a man-made manual press they designed to compress the rich red volcanic soils of the land. The soil was finely screened to ensure it was free of vegetation prior to it being combined with 5% cement to form the mud mix and individually hand pressed resulting in stunning solid ochre blocks.

Careful planning ensured the kids had their own space at one end with the parents retreat at the other with everything in between being a combination of vaulted angular ceilings and multiple living zones. The North facing kitchen has a wonderful view of the in-ground salt water pool and outdoor entertaining area. In total there are five bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living areas and an incredible loft with deck that overlooks the spectacular vista.

In addition; there are several sheds with one in particular self-contained and previously used as a home business with office. Once an orchard with 1000 fruit trees (700 stone fruit and 300 custard apple) today there still stands approximately 40 fruit bearing trees and a handplanted rainforest where to date 276 different species of birds have been recorded visiting. Eudlo Creek also shares 500 meters of its cascading journey with this property and the large dam provides irrigation via the Deutz Diesel pump.

Never taken to market before you can understand there has been mixed emotions but the decision has finally been made that it is time for the next chapters to be written. With so much to see only an inspection will do justice to what can only be described as natures paradise.
